At the end of August 2023 we held a ceremony at the Upper Kinsmen baseball field to recognize a generous donation by the Garami family, in honour of Andrés Garami, a former KBA coach and volunteer who passed away in 2021.
Andrés Garami was a beloved father, community member and volunteer. He coached in the Kanata Baseball Association for several years and was a consistently positive presence on the ball fields. He wanted all young players to have fun and he dedicated countless hours to that goal.
In Andrés’ memory, the Garami family is making donations to cover the costs of much-needed baseball equipment and field improvements that will benefit KBA players for years.
Robert Garami takes some BP in the new turtle donated in memory of his father Andrés Garami
This summer we installed a new protective “turtle” cage for batting practice on the Upper Kinsmen field, thanks to the Garami family. The previous KBA turtle cage was 40 years old and it finally collapsed during the spring 2022 derecho storms. The new cage is a tremendous upgrade that will benefit our current and future generations of young baseball players.
The Garami family is also donating funds for a new permanent scoreboard at the Lower Kinsmen field and there are plans for future upgrades at the Roland Michener South diamond. These are all major upgrades that will benefit both our Kanata players, and the hundreds of players we host during league games and tournaments, for many years.
Andrés' family, friends and former KBA players gathered in late August to dedicate the new turtle cage in his loving memory and to unveil a sign recognizing this legacy donation. We were also pleased to induct Ani Garami and Robert Garami as “Sustaining Members”, an honorary lifetime role defined by our KBA constitution.
Thank you to the Garami family for remembering Andrés Garami through these generous donations that will benefit young people in our community for many years to come.
