Umpire Training


2024 Umpire Certification Requirements: 

All  Umpire training will be a "hybrid" of online self-guided learner (~2 hours) plus a 4 hour in-person Umpire Camp!! 

Level 1 and Level 2: Umpire Camp will be on March 24, 11am-3pm @ Cardel Rec Center on Shea Rd.

Level 3 umpires: it's an Exam Year for Level 3 umpires - register at On-Deck.

  1. Register yourself as a KBA Umpire by clicking "Register" (top left of menu bar on our website), log-in, and select 'Official Registration', follow the prompts.
  2. Navigate to ondeck.baseballontario.com (make an account if you don't already have one)
  3. Click on 'Update My Profile' (found quickly by clicking the waffle icon, top right, click on your name/My Account//Update My Profile); scroll down to 'What is your primary role with Baseball Ontario?' and check off the correct umpire level that you will be this season.  For example, if you were a new umpire last year (level 1.1) you will check off Umpire - Level 1.2 (second year) for this year.
  4. Level 3 ONLY: In My Account/Certifications you should see your umpire level and click "Buy Now"  (payable to OBA)

 

KBA Umpire Development Program

Overall goals/vision:

1) support and build-up our umpires through increased training and comradeship while creating a "KBA Umpiring Crew" where all umpires feel safe, valued and proud to belong.

2) Provide a means for umpires to ask questions/seek clarification from the Umpire In Chief(s) (UICs) (email alias, text, FAQ etc) 

3) Provide a means for Coaches to give feedback on umpire performance at their games

4) Umpire recognition and retention plans

5) Improve umpire equipment and uniform provided by the league

 

KBA Advanced Umpire Certification Training: Pre-season training 

  • Level 1 Umps: Two 3-hour sessions, total of 6 hours of in-person training: April 7 11am - 2pm and April 14 11am-2pm at the Cardel Rec Center on Shea Rd. 
  • Level 2 Umps: April 14 12pm-3pm and April 21 11am-2pm at the Cardel Rec Center on Shea Rd
  • Level 3 Umps: April 21 12pm-3pm at the Cardel Rec Center on Shea Rd
  • Early May: work an exhibition game under supervision and guidance of our UIC

Perks for Umps who complete this new "KBA Advanced Umpire Certification" training 

1) Game scheduling priority

2) Additional pay (+$5/game)

3) Increased knowledge & confidence

 

In-Season Training Plan: 

1) Early May: on-field training (by KBA UIC's) *mandatory for new umpires, beneficial for all, bring your baseball glove*

2) May-June (spring season): personal evaluation report of each umpire (by UIC) 

3) Late June: on-field positioning refresher training

4) July-Aug (summer season): 2nd personal evaluation report for each umpire (by UIC) 

 

 

 

All 1st and 2nd year KBA Umpires must:

  • Obtain OBA Level 1 
  • Attend the indoor training sessions (2) lead by John Luong, UIC
  • Participate in umpiring an exhibition game in early May as the last step to earn you KBA Advanced Umpire Certificate.
